Things to Do in Malmo, Sweden: A Day Trip from Copenhagen with Charm, Gardens, and Cinnamon Buns

We weren't sure what to expect of Malmö, but it surprised us in the best way! Just a 40-minute train ride from Copenhagen, it's the perfect destination for a laid-back day trip with plenty to explore. The train ride itself is super easy and scenic, and once you arrive at Malmö Central Station, you'll find luggage lockers if you're stopping through with bags like we did. From there, it's an easy walk into the heart of the city.

If you're curious about what to do with your time, here's a full rundown of the best things to do in Malmo!

CINNAMON BUNS AT ST. JAKOBS STENUGNSBAGERI

You can't start your day in Sweden without a cinnamon bun, and St. Jakobs Stenugnsbageri is the spot. It's conveniently located right outside of the train station, so it's a great first stop upon arriving in Malmö! There's something special about sitting outside with a warm, gooey cinnamon roll and a strong coffee while the city wakes up around you. Their cardamom buns are also delicious.

LILLA TORG

Lilla Torg is a postcard-perfect square with cobblestone streets and half-timbered buildings that date back to the 16th century. It's one of the most charming parts of the city and a great place to grab lunch or sit at a café and people-watch. The square has been a hub of activity for centuries and still feels like the heart of Malmö's social life today.

Beyond the cafés, you'll find small galleries and shops tucked into the historic buildings, seasonal events, and pop-up markets. The square is especially lively during the warmer months, with open-air dining, street musicians, and the occasional art installation. A few blocks away, the Form/Design Center offers exhibitions on Scandinavian design and architecture, which is well worth a visit if you have time. Whether you're there to shop, eat, or just soak up the vibe, Lilla Torg is an ideal base for exploring central Malmö.

GAMLA VÄSTER (MALMÖ'S OLD TOWN)

Wandering through Gamla Väster is a must. This is Malmö's oldest neighborhood, with roots tracing back to the medieval period. Its winding streets and pastel-colored buildings give it a storybook feel. Many of the structures have been lovingly preserved to reflect the city's changing architectural influences (from medieval Scandinavian design to more recent continental European touches). Tucked-away courtyards invite exploration, and you'll find a scattering of art galleries showcasing local and Nordic artists, as well as boutiques and restaurants. Historically, this part of Malmö was home to merchants and artisans, and the legacy of that time can still be felt in the narrow alleys and distinctive facades.

JAKOB NILSGATAN

This little side street is worth detouring for. Lined with colorful, historic homes and cheery rows of sunflowers (in the right season!), it was one of my favorite scenes in Malmö. The area's history dates back to when Malmö was growing as a mercantile center in the 19th century, and its homes reflect classic Scandinavian residential design from that period. It's residential and quiet now, offering a peaceful contrast to the busier parts of the city. The vibrant buildings, framed by lush greenery and tall blooms, make it perfect for a slow stroll or snapping some photos.

MÖLLEPLATSEN & SLOTTSTRÄDGÅRDEN

This sprawling park and garden area is right by Malmö Castle, and it's a beautiful escape into nature within the city. Locals come here to walk, bike, or lounge in the grass, and it has a relaxed, community feel.

  • Slottsmöllan Windmill: This traditional Swedish windmill sits right by the park and is one of Malmö's historical landmarks. Initially built in the 19th century, it served as a working mill for many years and now stands as a quiet nod to the city's agricultural past. Though it's not open to the public, it's a beautiful structure that makes for a great photo spot, especially when the surrounding greenery is in full bloom! Just be mindful that it's tucked into the park but peaks a bit above the surrounding greenery, so it's easy to spot as you wander through Slottsträdgården.

  • Coffee Cart: When we visited, there was an adorable coffee cart on the path's edge in Mölleplatsen serving espresso drinks. It's definitely worth a stop as you wander the gardens!

  • Slottsträdgårdens Kafé: Tucked inside the gardens, this café is one of the coziest spots in town and one of the cutest we've stumbled upon in our travels! Surrounded by vibrant flower beds and the peaceful vibe of the garden, it's an ideal place to slow down and enjoy a meal. They serve up seasonal dishes, salads, and homemade desserts. If the weather is good, try to grab a seat outside under the trees. It's such a hidden gem.

BOOK A BOAT MALMÖ

One of the most unique things to do in Malmö is to rent a small electric boat and captain it yourself through the city's canals. Book a Boat Malmö offers easy rentals with no boating license required. You'll get a quick tutorial, and then you're off. Pack snacks, some wine, and maybe a deck of cards for a slow cruise with views of the city from the water. It's a peaceful, fun way to see Malmö from a totally different perspective.

MALMÖ SALUHALL

If you're ready for lunch or love a good food market, Malmö Saluhall is a must. Housed in a beautifully converted warehouse, this food hall brings together some of Malmö's best eats under one roof. You'll find a mix of local and international cuisine, everything from hand-pulled ramen and falafel wraps to Swedish meatballs and open-faced sandwiches. There are also pastry stalls, cheese counters, and even a few specialty grocers where you can pick up items to take home. It's modern but warm and easy to navigate, with plenty of communal seating. Try to go a little early or later than peak lunch hours to avoid crowds and get a good seat.

VÄSTRA HAMNEN

Next, head to Västra Hamnen, Malmö's modern waterfront district. Once an industrial shipyard, the area has transformed into one of the city's most sustainable neighborhoods. It's now home to the iconic Turning Torso, Sweden's tallest building, designed by Santiago Calatrava. This twisting tower is a must-see for architecture lovers.

On a clear day, the waterfront promenade offers views across the water to Copenhagen. The nearby Malmö Lighthouse adds a historic touch to the modern skyline and is especially photogenic around sunset. The whole area is perfect for a stroll, with wide boardwalks, contemporary sculptures, and benches for taking in the sea breeze.

RIBERSBORGS KALLBADHUS

Wrap up your day with a visit to this open-air bathhouse right on the edge of the Öresund Strait. The bathhouse dates back to 1898 and offers traditional Swedish saunas and cold-water dips, all while overlooking the water! There are separate sections for men and women, and swimsuits are optional in the saunas. It's a refreshing and very Swedish way to wind down, especially after a full day of walking and sightseeing!

Whether you're popping over from Copenhagen or spending a full day exploring the city, Malmö is full of charm, history, and ridiculously good cinnamon buns. Hopefully, this guide gives you a good head start in planning your visit. If you go and enjoy any of our recommendations, let us know in the comments!
